In attendance: 16 people (4 PWS, 1 PWS / SLP, 2 PWS / students, 4 SLPs, 4 students, and 1 partner of a PWS)
As usual, we opened the meeting with introductions and updates. Kavan is a father! Hooray! Glenn ran the Hood to Coast, we had some new graduate students, and Michael related his recent experiences at the National Stuttering Association meeting and Camp Our Time. His observation that at both of those places, stuttering was “normalized” began our discussion.
We mostly wrestled with the idea of speech tools, even maybe having a “tool night” – or is the point of our stuttering support group to be free from using tools, and to stutter openly? We talked about stuttering openly, and about openly stuttering – and how that all relates to the process of desensitization.
In terms of desensitization, a recent video that was floating around YouTube was mentioned, and as usual, Kerry got all teary talking about it and promised everyone else would like it just as much – it’s not about stuttering, but it’s about our society’s view of disabilities and beauty and acceptance.
